The F-61 Banshee Light Starfighter is the production version of the experimental YF-6100. Several of the new technologies tested in the YF-6100 have been incorporated in this new fighter. Successful technologies include the zero-point energy plant, the quantum pulse cannons, and the triadium armor plating. The engine systems also survived the trial period, but in a modified form. Technologies that failed to make the grade were the carbon neutronium reinforing and the man/machine neuro-interface.

The Banshee's two main armaments remain unaltered from the experimental phase.

Pulse Compression Phasers

These are similar to the standard phaser banks used on many types of small Starfleet vessels from shuttlecraft to runabouts, but have been adapted to fire compressed pulses instead of continuous streams. Their relatively low power is offset by their extremely high refire rate.

Quantum Pulse Cannons

The quantum pulse cannon is very similar in concept to the standard quantum torpedo. Both employ an extremely energetic localized release of zero-point energy, but where the torpedo employs a metallic casing to deliver the destructive energy to the target, the quantum pulse is pure energy. A tight gravitic matrix confines the quantum effect to a spherical area approximately 1 meter in diameter and propels it at the speed of light toward its target. This means that the quantum pulse falls far short of a torpedo's multi-warp speeds, but given the Banshee fighter's primary purpose as a sub-light combat craft, this shortcoming should not prove to be a liability.

Given their non-baryonic composition, quantum pulses are only partially hindered by a target's defensive shields. The disproportionately large destructive power this weapon bestows upon a craft as small as a one-man fighter is offset by the long 20-second recharge time the weapon requires.

The quantum pulse cannon was specifically designed for the Banshee fighter as its secondary weapon since the small size and other space constraints of the Banshee class made it impossible to incorporate a standard or even micro torpedo system.


Armor plating and shielding remain unaltered from the experimental phase, but the carbon neutronium reinforcing has been eliminated completely, reducing the Banshee's mass by 27 tons and significantly increasing maneuverability and dogfighting agility.

Triadium Armored Hull

The main spaceframe of the Banshee fighter is composed of standard tridanium and duranium. The hull has an outer sheathing of triadium, an alloy discovered in the Delta Quadrant by the USS Voyager. Triadium is extremely heavy and dense, but when manufactured in thin enough sheets, its strength and flexibility provide excellent protection against kinetic and particle weapons.

Metaphasic Refractive Shields

Metaphasic shields consist of a series of overlapping subspace fields, causing the enclosed ship to exist partially inside subspace. While thus submerged, it is only marginally affected by attacks and other forces acting on it. The downside of this type of shield is that it is of limited use against weapons that can be tuned to a matching frequency (like phasers) or subspace weapons (such as those employed by the Son'a). In such situations, the Banshee must rely on its agility to evade the attack.

Banshee shield generators also project a refractive bubble around the ship. As a result, 80% of enemy sensor beams are reflected away in random directions never returning to the sending ship, rendering the Banshee very stealthy, though not invisible in the way that a true cloaking device would provide.


The main power plant aboard the Banshee fighter is the new quantum generator. Instead of using a matter/antimatter intermix reactor, the quantum plant generates power using a zero-point energy extractor. The device is small and utilizes no hazardous materials, thus making it ideal for use in small combat craft.

Quantum power generation is one of the advanced technologies brought back from the Delta Quadrant by the USS Voyager.


The propulsion systems aboard the F-61 have been modified somewhat from the original design implemented on the YF-6100 experimental Banshee. High warp speed and endurance have been sacrificed to boost the Impulse performance and maneuvering, and the Warp Burst capability has been enhabced over the original.

Warp Engines

A large portion of the body of the Banshee fighter consists of the machinery comprising its warp drive engines. They are of simple and rugged design and can propel the ship up to WF4, or WF6 in emergencies, but are not designed for long-distance travel.

Impulse Engines

The twin impulse engines are powered by a standard micro-fusion plant. The power plant has enough stored fuel for 1 month of continual operation. The external Bussard collectors can replenish the fuel cells from the gas from any nebula of the appropriate composition.

Reaction Control System

Expelled gas thrusters located at the extremities of the Banshee's hull expedite the rapid turning of the craft. Using the RCS, the Banshee can maneuver rapidly when required, or perform the most delicate of maneuvers.

Warp Burst

The primary mission of the Banshee fighter is sublight combat, but high warp speed is occassionally required, either to pursue a fleeing enemy or to travel to the scene of a battle when no carrier vessel is available. For this purpose, a "Warp Burst" mode has been incorporated into the Banshee's warp drive system. All the stored energy in the ship's quantum capacitor is fed all at once into the warp engines creating a 50,000 millicochrane surge in the warp field, resulting in a speed burst of approximately 50 warp factors. After 20 seconds, the extra energy is spent and the enhanced warp field collapses, leaving the Banshee again in normal space.

The strain that burst mode puts on the warp engines is damaging to both engines and craft, and can only be used once or twice before the craft must be overhauled. Also, because the quantum capacitor is severely drained by this procedure, normal warp drive is unavailable for the 20 minutes it takes the capacitor to recharge. However, all other systems continue to function, drawing their power directly from the quantum generator or the micro-fusion plant.


The Banshee fighter is fitted with a highly specialized bio-neural gel-pack computer control system that is tied directly into a tight-beam tachyon-based sensor and tracking system. It can target and accurately track multiple contacts.

The neural pilot interface of the YF-6100 program has been eliminated and replaced by a more conventional heads-up display (HUD) system, which projects targeting and flight information on the canopy glass.


The following ship systems are slightly modified versions of standard ship systems.

  • Navigational Deflector

These systems have been enhanced in order to compensate for the Banshee's high sublight acceleration and warp burst mode.


The F-61 Banshee is an endo-exo-atmospheric craft, meaning it is fully operable both within a planet's atmosphere and in the vacuum of deep space, and the impulse engines deliver more than sufficient thrust for the craft to acheive escape velocity from a typical Class-M planet.

In case of emergency, the cockpit can be detached from the rest of the craft and serve as an emergency life boat, and has enough supplies and power for one week.
